Thomas Jefferson was of course responsible for creating the University of Virginia. He drew the plans for the campus, the buildings, the curriculum, etc. It turns out James Madison and James Monroe were on the original board of “visitors.” In his retirement, Madison was very involved in building the college. He was even took the lead himself for eight years after Jefferson died.
