When Taylor was elected the twelfth President in 1848, he followed the common practice of that era and asked for everyone in the federal government from the other party to resign so he could appoint members of his own party. Nathaniel Hawthorne worked in customs in Salem until he lost his job after the election. He used his newly found free time well by writing The Scarlet Letter and The House of Seven Gables.
