First White House Library (Hooray!)

Fillmore’s wife Abigail was, like him, a voracious reader. She could not believe there was no permanent library in the White House, so she asked Congress to appropriate some funds to create a library. She spent a lot of time doing collection development and invited writers to visit. Among others, she met Washington Irving, Charles Dickens and William Makepeace Thackeray.
