Grant’s View of Slavery

For a time, Grant managed a farm where he had to manage slaves. Being from Ohio where “slavery was broadly deemed an affront to free labor and republican principles,” Grant did not believe in slavery. He was not an abolitionist, but he was not comfortable owning another human being. “He couldn’t force them to do anything. He was just so good and good tempered…”
