After Garfield’s death, his wife Lucretia’s mission was to protect his image: literally and figuratively. She turned away many artists who painted terrible depictions of her husband. She collected his papers and had a vault installed in their house for the most valuable of his things. She probably created the first Presidential Library in Mentor, Ohio.
